Bucharest City Hall To Subsidize Heating Costs Following Price Hike – Mayor

Sorin Oprescu, mayor of Romanian capital Bucharest, said Tuesday that the City Hall would cover the 8.3% hike in heating costs, so the price would be unchanged for consumers.

According to Oprescu, this subsidy will cost the City 100 million lei (EUR1=RON4.1355) per year. The proposal will be put on the Bucharest General Council’s agenda, the mayor said.

Romanian thermal power producer ELCEN raised heating prices in capital city Bucharest and the southeastern city of Constanta by 9% and 10%, respectively, as of January 1, following a decision of the country’s energy watchdog ANRE adopted at the end of last year.

„The new prices cover current costs, but there still remain losses of over RON550 million,” ELCEN manager Irina Duica said last week.
