Romanian Liberal Leaders Say No Talk Of Sacking Foreign Minister

Romanian defense minister Teodor Melescanu, in charge with the Romanian liberals’ local election campaign, said Monday there was no talk in the party regarding the behavior of foreign minister Adrian Cioroianu during the NATO summit, nor was there any talk of replacing him.

Asked whether party leaders discussed the criticism of liberal vice-president Norica Nicolai toward the foreign minister, Melescanu said Nicolai does not admit to having made the respective statements.

"Nicolai said in our meeting that the reflection of the statements attributed to her is incorrect, therefore there is no question of replacing Mr. Cioroianu," Melescanu said.

Romanian daily "Cotidianul" published in its online edition Friday a statement attributed to Nicolai.

“It would be best for everyone if Mr. Cioroianu stayed hidden during the summit,” Nicolai was quoted as saying on Realitatea TV.

Also Friday, democrat liberal vice-president Theodor Stolojan criticized the foreign minister’s behavior during the summit, saying “he missed his calling” and “skipped a few important steps” before becoming minister.
