"As far as the budget allows it, wages and pensions must be increased. Hiking low wages and pensions is one of the measures in the government’s anti-crisis plan and stimulates consumption,” Geoana said.

According to the paper, Geoana said such a measure was discussed in the government.

"It was put forward among several options, but we didn’t consider it seriously. We’re still intent on finding resources for hikes," the social democrat leader said.

Social democrats and liberal democrats, which make up Romania’s ruling coalition, will have a new round of talks on the 2009 state budget Tuesday evening.

Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday on public radio that he won’t react negatively if the government reaches an agreement with unions and freezes salaries and pensions for six months to use public money to salvage the economy.

"I won’t react negatively if the government reaches an agreement with unions to freeze salaries and pensions for six months, to see what happens (with the economy – e.n.),” Basescu said.

He added that, in his opinion, the priorities are directing resources into works that create jobs, the payment of debts the government has to economic operators and the reduction of bureaucracy, which is “suffocating and inefficient".
