Romania’s Local Mobile Operators Cut Roaming Tariffs To Comply With EU Rules
As of Saturday, prices for outgoing calls to EU states will be EUR0.46/minute, and prices for incoming calls will be EUR0.22/minute, VAT not included.
Operators currently charge EUR0.49/minute for calls made to EU states and EUR0.24/minute for calls received, VAT not included.
Vodafone Romania’s lower roaming charges became effective on August 18.
The European Commission set that mobile operators have until August 30 to lower roaming tariffs.
Telemobil, operator of the Zapp Mobile network, is not subject to EU regulations on roaming charges, as it uses European networks on other frequencies.
Telemobil is one of the few operators in the European Union to provide telecom services on CDMA technology in the 450 MHz frequency, while the generally used standard is GSM in 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz.
The fifth mobile operator on the Romanian market, RCS&RDS, launched mobile services in October 2007 and company general manager Ovidiu Ghiman told MEDIAFAX Friday that roaming services are only just being tested and are only available to a small number of clients.
Under a regulation adopted by the European Commission in June 2007, new cuts in roaming charges are to be operated in August 2009, to reach EUR0.43/minute for outgoing calls and EUR0.19/minute for incoming calls.
