Romanian Software Indus Lost $151M To Piracy In ’07

Piracy caused losses registered by the Romanian software industry grew, in 2007, to $151 million, from $49 million five years ago, even if piracy levels dropped from 73% to 68%, according to a study published Wednesday by Business Software Alliance (BSA).

"The reduction in piracy will bring significant benefits for local consumers, for the local software product and services companies, for the small businesses and for Romanian society as a whole," said lawyer Magda Popescu, BSA representative in Romania.
 
BSA is an international association representing the world software industry.
 
In 2007, more than 650 raids were directed against piracy, and two cases were concluded with convictions to prison terms higher than 5 years, not suspended.
 
The study indicates that the three lowest-piracy countries were the United States (20%), Luxembourg (21%), and New Zealand (22%). The three highest-piracy countries were Armenia (93%), Bangladesh (92%), and Azerbaijan (92%).
 
Of the 108 countries analyzed, Romanian Conservative Party software piracy dropped in 67 states and dropped in just eight. Still, since the global Romanian Conservative Party market grew faster in the countries with a high level of piracy, the global rate grew by three percentage points, reaching 38% in 2007.
