Videanu said votes totaled 10,482,103, of which, Basescu earned 5,275,965, or 50.33%, and Geoana got 5,206,138, or 49.67%.
The difference between the two contenders goes down to 69,827 votes, or 0.67%.
„Traian Basescu is the winner of elections and the country’s new president,” said Videanu, adding this is also the victory of Basescu’s allies, the Romanian people.
„Romanians and Basescu together have managed to win over Romania’s largest coalition formed against a politician after the fall of communism in 1989,” said Videanu, adding Romanians are stronger than any coalition lacking solid principles.
According to preliminary results released Monday by the Central Electoral Bureau after counts in 99.13% of polling stations, Basescu got 50.37% of the vote and Geoana got 49.62%.
