Tariceanu said he spoke on the phone with the Italian new foreign minister Franco Frattini about the measures initiated by the Italian authorities to crack down on crime and immigration.

“The Italian foreign minister informed that the measures concerning immigration considered by the Italian authorities are meant for citizens outside EU. No measures that would affect communitarian citizens are considered and the European norms will not be breached,” Tariceanu said during a Cabinet meeting.

He mentioned Romania’s interior minister Cristian David will leave for an official visit to Rome to discuss the situation of Romanian migrants in Italy.

“I am confident that Romania and Italy, as European states, will have the capacity, the wisdom and balance to overcome this situation,” Tariceanu said.

On Monday, Tariceanu asked David to go to Italy to discuss with the authorities in Rome about their plans concerning Romanian immigrants in Italy.

On Sunday, Italy’s new interior minister announced the authorities plan to re-impose border controls for travelers from Europe’s passport-free Schengen zone as part of security measures to fight crime and immigration.

The move is aimed mainly against Romanian immigrants and Eastern European Roma people, who have been blamed for crimes in Italy.
