Romania’s Employment Rate Among Lowest In EU – Eurostat

Romania has one of the lowest employment rates in the European Union for people aged 15 to 64, of just 58.6% in 2009, while the European average is at 64.6%, the EU’s statistical office Eurostat said Wednesday.

The biggest employment rates are in the Netherlands (77%), Denmark (75.7%) and Sweden (72.6%).

Only three other EU states have lower employment rates than Romania, namely Malta (54.9%), Hungary (55.4%) and Italy (57.5%).

In Austria, the employment rate was at 71.6% in 2009, and the indicator was at 70.9% in Germany.

In Spain, the EU country with the highest number of jobless people, the employment rate is of 59.8%, higher than in Romania.

Bulgaria’s rate is at 62.6% and the Czech Republic’s is at 65.4%. The Baltic states, severely affected by the financial crisis and with unemployment rates nearing 20% in the past year, all exceed the 60% threshold in employment rate.

Romania has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU, of 7.4%.
