Supreme Court Decides To Suspend Sentences Of Multiple High-Profile Corruption Culprits

Former ministers Dan Sova and Constantin Nita, tax agency ANAF chief Serban Pop and Boxing Federation Chairman Rudel Obreja will all be released from prison, after the court decided to suspend their sentences until the contestations are solved.

The Supreme Court also made the same decision in the case of former top anti-terrorism prosecutor Alina Bica, who is currently detained in Costa Rica based on an Interpol warrant issued by Romanian authorities. She will also be released after the decision is communicated to Costa Rican authorities.

This comes after a Constitutional Court ruling in November decided that all of the Supreme Court’s five-judge panels in the past five years were selected through an erroneous procedure, enabling everyone sentenced by such a panel to contest the rulings.
