Romanian Education Faces Kindergarten Deficit

The number of Romanian children with ages between 3 and 7 and who could register in kindergartens in school year 2008/2009 is higher by 200,000 compared to the number of kindergarten vacancies on a national level, according to education minister Cristian Adomnitei.

Adomnitei said that, according to data form the National Institute for Statistics, on a national level, there are 791,438 children with ages between 3 and 7 who could register with kindergartens in school year 2008-2009, but, according to estimations, only 632,870 will register, of whom 39,300 in Bucharest.
The total capacity in kindergartens is 591,952 positions, of which 26,200 in Bucharest.
Adomnitei presented to the Government a note on the measures taken in the past year for the reduction of this deficit.
Thus, 843 kindergartens were constructed and outfitted, with 49,681 spots, and they will enter the education network for school year 2008/2009.
Between 2007 and 2008 on a national level, 637,086 children were registered in kindergartens, of whom 34,387 in Bucharest.
In 2008, RON215,723 million were allocated for 1,201 objectives. In this sum, RON140,056 were allocated for 600 works on new kindergartens, as well as expansion and outfitting of spaces.
