Basescu said Romania is able to meet the Maastricht criteria (for euro adoption) by 2015, but pointed out that the crisis has shown that fulfilling them is not enough.

The president said the country needs a competitive economy, durable development, not based on excessive consumption or a real estate boom, but on its own advances, concluding that it is unlikely Romania could become a „solid economic pillar” within the Eurozone by the current deadline.
