European Parliament Passes Resolution Criticizing Romania’s Judicial Reform

The report on the situation in Romania, drafted by the body’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Commission (LIBE), was passed with 489 votes for, 112 against and 73 abstentions.

The resolution’s text expresses the Parliament’s concern regarding the amendments brought to criminal and judicial legislation by the country’s ruling coalition, stating that they risk undermining judicial independence and the fight against corruption.

The document, published on the European Parliament’s website, also contains 13 recommendations for Romania and European Union institutions regarding the country’s judicial system and fight against corruption.

The resolution follows two debates hosted by the EU Parliament on the subjects, attended by Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and President Klaus Iohannis, respectively.
