Romanian Opposition To Organize Anti-Government Protest Rally
Ponta highlighted the rally and march will not be organized by the Liberal Party alone, but by the Social Liberal Union (a political alliance made up of opposition liberals and social democrats).
Liberal leader Crin Antonescu recently announced the opposition plans to organize its own protest action, while Ponta was more cautious in his statements and said the opposition should avoid actions that could make it a scapegoat for recent riots in Bucharest.
Romanians are protesting countrywide demanding the resignation of President Traian Basescu and the Government, displeased with their anti-crisis policies.
Street demonstrations were sparked last week by the resignation of Dr. Raed Arafat from the position of deputy secretary of state in the Health Ministry. Arafat’s reappointment to the same position this Tuesday was not enough to quiet protesters.
