„We’ll prepare a draft government decision for next week to raise the number of available car scrapping vouchers because demand is high,” Borbely said, adding there is enough money in the environment fund for all clunkers.

The minister said 11,000 new cars have been bought under the program so far this year, adding this is the biggest growth in the EU except for Great Britain and the trend continues.

Mid-March this year, the government assigned an additional RON195 million for the 2010 clunkers program, to issue 50,000 new vouchers.

The scrapping bonus was kept at RON3,800 and the government initially said it plans to scrap about 60,000 old cars but has since revised its target to over 100,000 clunkers.

Romania’s 2010 clunkers program set off on February 18, after the Government relaunched the campaign for the scrapping of old cars. Under the new program, one owner can scrap multiple cars and receive multiple vouchers.
