The agency reported online earlier Tuesday that following a phone call, Venice police pulled over a car driven by a Romanian immigrant. The trunk of the car contained the lifeless body of a 44 years old woman.

Police also found a knife in the trunk of the car, along a bag belonging to the victim.

Romania’s Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform, or MIRA, said in a statement Tuesday that Italian police data showed no evidence of Romanians being involved in the incident.

“The information given by Venice police to the Romanian police officers deployed in Italy shows there was not any Romanian citizens involved in the incident reported by an Italian online news agency according to which «a Romanian immigrant was arrested in Venice after police found the body of a dead woman in the trunk of his car»,” the statement noted.

According to Italian police data, the car is registered in Germany and the driver is not a Romanian national, MIRA said.
