Bucharest Court Of Appeals Sentences Munaf To Ten Years In Prison

Iraqi-American citizen Mohamad Munaf, guide to three Romanian journalists kidnapped in Iraq in 2005, was sentenced Thursday to ten years in prison by the Bucharest Court of Appeals.

The court also ordered Munaf to pay damages of EUR2 million to each of the three journalists: Ovidiu Ohanesian, Sorin Miscoci and Marie – Jeanne Ion.
 
Munaf, charged with acts of terror, was sentenced to ten years in prison and deprivation of rights for an additional five years after he serves his sentence.
 
The court also rejected the request to expel Munaf from Romanian territory after he serves his sentence, under article 8 of the Euriopean convention of Human Rights and Law 194 of 2002 regarding the status of foreigners in Romania.
 
The court also ordered Munaf to pay RON100,000 in legal costs.
 
The sentence may be appealed with a higher court.
