Moldova Closes Borders With Romania, Denies Access Of Journalists

Tuesday evening, the leader of the Association of Young Moldovans in Iasi, eastern Romania, Dan Caranfil, said at least four buses carrying Moldovan students studying in Iasi will try to cross the border again on Wednesday after they were denied access into the Republic of Moldova Tuesday.
 
Moldovan security forces took control of the Parliament and Presidency buildings attacked by demonstrators and isolated the capital from the rest of the country. Moldovan customs officers at the Giurgiulesti crossing point denied access of Romanian and international journalists into Moldova, saying they weren’t accredited by the Moldovan Foreign Ministry.
 
Five correspondents of Reuters, France Press and European Pressphoto Agency, four correspondents of Romanian public television TVR and four reporters of Romanian daily Evenimentul Zilei were denied access to Moldova Tuesday night. Journalists tried to cross the border through the Oancea customs point but were again denied access.
 
Anticommunist protesters were dispersed Tuesday night but will return to the central square in Chisinau Wednesday to resume protests.
Moldovan police said it detained 193 protesters Tuesday, RIA Novosti reported online.
 
Fourteen people remain committed in the Chisinau emergency hospital Wednesday morning and 56 were released from hospital, Moldovan agency BASA-press reported. About 100 police were injured in the clash, RIA Novosti cited the Moldovan Interior Ministry as saying.
