The president of the Republic of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, resumed accusations directed at neighbor Romania in an interview for daily Evenimentul Zilei, saying Romania is Europe’s last empire.
Moldovan President Says Romania Pulls Strings To Reclaim Its Eastern Neighbor
Voronin said Romania illegally funds political parties in Moldova in a move to reintegrate its small eastern neighbor into a single state.
Voronin added the relations between the two countries have always been tense.
"Romania has always, starting 16 years ago, got involved in Moldova’s interior affairs," the Moldovan president said, adding Romania imposes on its neighbor, using different methods, its own standards in terms of language, history, currency name, flag and heraldry.
"And many, many other things that Romania has been shoving down our throats for years," Voronin said.
Asked how Romania supposedly does all that, Voronin said the country has its own people whom it pays, and who are supported by the media, in setors such as culture and science.
Speaking about politicians in Chisinau, Voronin said Romania finances illegally entire political parties in the Republic of Moldova. He explained that such funding is illegal, as Moldovan law bans funding for parties from external sources. He also said Moldovan prosecutors have started investigations in this respect.
Referring to other moves Romania has made, Voronin mentioned the “recent involvement of the Romanian Orthodox Church,” which opened three bishoprics in Moldova.
Asked if he considers such a move to be aggressive, Voronin said: "Absolutely, it is an act of aggression directed at believers in the Republic of Moldova and against our own orthodox church and we will not remain indifferent.”
The Moldovan president said Romania is doing all this in an attempt to reclaim Moldova and integrate it into a single state.
