Romanian Official: Decentralization In Education May Start In Three Months

The contests needed to appoint school principals, substitute teachers and to grant tenure should be organized at local level, according to the decentralization process, which could start as soon as in three months, Liviu Dragnea, head of the Union of Country Councils in Romania, said Tuesday.

He pointed out the decentralization process in education could start in three months, along with the beginning of the school year, if politicians prove ready and willing to get involved and support the process.

Government officials met Tuesday, at the Interior Ministry headquarters, with unionists and the representatives of local communities to discuss the elements to be included in the decentralization process in the education sector.

Dragnea stressed the contest should be unfolded based on a scheme drafted by the Education Ministry and added the mayoralty should also get involved in the process.

According to Dragnea, it is necessary to give more power to local communities and entrust them with more tasks.

"I do believe the government should give more power to local communities, which know what needs to be done so that children benefit from a better education process. Local authorities want mayors, the heads of local and county councils, as well as parents, to get more involved in the education process," Dragnea said.

Mariana Becic, vice-president of the Federation of Free Unions in Education (FSLI), said the decentralization process is a very good step forward, adding it will allow school principals, for instance, to handle the education process much easier.

Prime Minister Emil Boc said Sunday the government will analyze, within ten days, the draft laws regarding decentralization in education, agriculture, culture and labor, after laws transferring the duties in healthcare, police and sports to local authorities were approved on Sunday.
