The parade began with the state anthem and salvo salutes.
Officials in attendance include Prime Minister Emil Boc, General Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana, Romanian Intelligence Service head George Maior, former ministers Adriean Videanu and Vasile Blaga, former prime ministers Petre Roman and Nicolae Vacaroiu, and Greater Romania Party leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor.
The parade features 1,500 troops, police officers and gendarmes. Because of the bad weather, the airplanes and helicopters that were to fly overhead have been grounded.
Romania's national holiday, occuring on December 1, marks the union of Transylvania with the Kingdom of Romania (1918).
