However, Basescu pointed out that, in order for Roma people’s situation to improve, the Roma community must acknowledge it has certain responsibilities. Failing that, Basescu said, all government and European programs destined for Roma are doomed to fail and no progress will be made regardless of how much money is spent.

„The key is for Roma people to send their children to school,” the president said, arguing that this will lead to better employment and better wages, and improve the community’s standing in society.

President Basescu also raised the issue of Roma ethnics abroad, who, he said, damage Romania’s image, but who are acknowledged as being Romanian citizens by every politician.

Basescu said that, according to a report drafted by the presidential Commission on social and demographic risks, the Roma minority is „without a doubt” the most affected by social risks and the methods to prevent their situation getting worse are very different from any concerning the ethnic Romanian population.

Since being elected, Basescu has been seen to enjoy Roma music. For instance, in September 2009, Basescu and his wife, Maria Basescu, attended the Roma Festival in Costesti and danced on stage to traditional Roma music.
