The Bucharest Stock Exchange, or BVB, cannot survive in its current organization and its only solution to grow is to become a regional bourse, Romanian businessman Dinu Patriciu said Monday.

"I believe in BVB’s future, if it’s smart enough to become regional and to contribute to transforming Bucharest into the financial center of the region. As it is now, BVB cannot survive. I believe that BVB has incredible assets to become a regional bourse," Patriciu said at the opening of the Bucharest Stock Exchange Monday.

The bourse should have a marketing policy aiming to attract investors in the region on the local capital market.

"BVB needs a market of 100 million inhabitants and not only 20 million. BVB could start a new life (…) I wish it a long life if it follows this track," Patriciu said.

Patriciu is the founder of Rompetrol Group, which he sold to Kazahstan’s KazMunayGaz.
