Munaf’s Ten-Year Prison Sentence Ruled By Bucharest Court Of Appeals Is Final

The decision of the Bucharest Court of Appeals was not challenged at the High Court of Justice, therefore Ovidiu Ohanesian, one of the journalists kidnapped in 2005, submitted an application to be paid a damage estimated at EUR2 million, which made the ruling final.

Munaf, guide to three Romanian journalists kidnapped in Iraq in 2005, was sentenced in 2008 to ten years in prison by the Bucharest Court of Appeals. The court also ordered Munaf to pay damages of EUR2 million to each of the three journalists: Ovidiu Ohanesian, Sorin Miscoci and Marie - Jeanne Ion.

Munaf, charged with acts of terrorism, was sentenced to ten years in prison and deprivation of rights for an additional five years after he serves his sentence.

The court also rejected the request to expel Munaf from Romanian territory after he serves his sentence, under article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights and Law 194 of 2002 regarding the status of foreigners in Romania.

The court also ordered Munaf to pay RON100,000 in legal costs.
