Court Rejects Sorin Oprescu’s Appeal
The judge saw the challenge as unfounded. The decision can be challenged by appeal within 24 hours.
Oprescu and will now talk to his lawyers to decide if they will challenge the electoral office’s decision in the Court of Appeal, and the decision depends on the reasons for the rejection of the initial challenge.
In their plea, Oprescu’s lawyers asked the court to approve the challenge issued against Bucharest Electoral Office Decision 30 on April 22, which dubbed invalid Oprescu’s candidacy for the position of general mayor of Bucharest, and to validate Oprescu’s candidacy.
The lawyers said the decision does not indicate any conditions that Oprescu failed to meet when submitting his candidacy, and requested the voiding of the mentioned decision.
In addition, Oprescu’s lawyers said the Central Electoral Office issued precise information on the number of registered voters and the number of signatures necessary for candidacy support only after the Bucharest Electoral Office rejected the candidacy.
The Bucharest electoral office rejected Wednesday the candidacy of former social democrat senator Sorin Oprescu, as over 4000 signatures backing him for the race were invalid and he was left 400 signatures short.
