The new law states that for every 30 days spent in inappropriate conditions, an inmate will have 6 days subtracted from his sentence.
The piece of legislation is part of the measures Romania has been taking in response to a deadline from the European Court of Human Rights that demanded the country to draft a plan which would tackle the overcrowding of penitentiaries and the improper prison conditions reported by inmates, such as the lack of hygiene, the inadequate sanitary facilities and the presence of rats and insects in cells.
