If negotiations with China General Nuclear Power Corporation should fail, Romania’s nuclear power plant operator Nuclearelectrica will build the two new units on its own, the minister said.
Nuclearelectrica is currently in negotiations with the Chinese company to build the two reactors through a joint-venture to be owned 51% by China and 49% by Romania. The two companies signed a preliminary investors’ agreement in May this year.
Romania has been talking about developing two more nuclear reactor units at its plant in Cernavoda since 2003. Units 3 and 4 have been in conservation since 1992. The nuclear power plant in Cernavoda currently operates two 700-megawatt reactors, covering around 20% of the country’s energy consumption.
