In a statement issued Wednesday, the European Commission describes the move as the “end of the roaming rip-off.”
The European Union has capped the fees for roaming texts at EUR0.11, compared to the EUR0.28 per text charged by mobile operators, and set a maximum limit for data traffic in mobile networks at EUR1 per megabyte, compared to EUR1.68 per megabyte before the new rules.
According to the new rules, the cost for a roaming call placed within the European Union is capped at EUR0.43 per minute, down from EUR0.46 per minute. For a received call, the cap is EUR0.19 per minute, down from EUR0.22 per minute.
Therefore, a Romanian travelling to Spain will pay a maximum of EUR0.51 (including VAT) for outgoing calls and EUR0.13 for sent text messages, the EC statement said.
According to the EC, the measures are expected to cut roaming charges for EU consumers by a further 60% and increase mobile phone use.
The main mobile operators on the Romanian market, Orange, Vodafone and Cosmote, announced in June that they will comply with the new EU norms and reduce their roaming fees as of July 1.
