According to La Repubblica newspaper, Maroni approached this subject in his first day of office, as immigration represents the biggest problem with respect for the country’s security policy.
The official, who will present his proposals before the Council of Ministers, had previously announced that if necessary “he would negotiate with the European Commission the rules on free movement in order to impose certain limits if national security was at stake.”
This is a very difficult task for Maroni, taking into consideration he may need to inform Romanian authorities that some of the country’s citizens, especially the Rroma people, will no longer have access to Italy.
