Romanian Subway Co Metrorex Might Up Ticket Prices 5-7% This Year

Romania’s state-owned subway company Metrorex could increase subway pass prices by 5-7% this year if inflation tops 5% for the interval May 2009- May 2010, company general manager Gheorghe Udriste said Wednesday.

„We might adjust ticket prices depending n certain economic indicators, that is if inflation exceeds 5% for a certain period,” Udriste said.

Metrorex last hiked ticket prices in May 2009. A two-trip pass now costs 2.5 lei (EUR1=RON4.1092), a ten-trip pass costs RON8 and a monthly pass costs RON25.

Yearend inflation in 2009 stood at 5.2% according to the Romanian statistics institute INS. Monthly inflation increased from 0.3% in December 2009 to 1.68% in January 2010, the highest level since April 2005, boosted by higher prices for tobacco products, fuel and utilities.
