The party, formed by independent lawmakers who left the country’s biggest leftist party, the Social Democratic Party, will launch its new political identity on May 1, when Romania, a former communist country, celebrates International Workers’ Day.
Sources said the party will organize a rally and will invite unionists to its launching event.
People close to the matter said last week former social democrat Marian Sarbu would be the new party’s president, defense minister and former social democrat Gabriel Oprea would be executive president and former social democrat Cristian Diaconescu would be the party’s honorary president.
Several members of the leftist Social Democratic Party and rightist Liberal Party, both in opposition, quit their parties and joined the independent lawmakers’ group recently.
