The minister added works on the highway are behind schedule.
"In the budget revision at the end of June, the government will assign EUR200 million for 2008. Works on the highway are behind schedule and they (U.S. Bechtel – e.n.) tried to tell us the delays were due to the lack of guarantee on financing. However, they haven’t spent what we’ve assigned so far. We also discussed about next year, when we’ll assign EUR500 million for two new highway sections,” Orban said.
Construction works on Transylvania highway started in 2004 based on a contract worth EUR2.2 billion, which was assigned to U.S. construction company Bechtel.
However, works were halted mid-2005 when the authorities looked into the contracts concluded during previous governments.
Under these circumstances, the initial deadline for the completion of works, set for 2012, was extended by one year.
