Basescu launched, as promised, a new method of communication with the people, actullay, an alternative to the press, thus he opened a hotline.
The president himself answers calls at 031.620.62.00. In fact, an answering machine with the president’s recorded voice says: "Hello. This is Traian Basescu, president of Romania. Come help us clean up! I have chosen this way of communication because I want you to know directly from me why we need a referendum to introduce the uninominal voting. These are things that regard you personally and that influence your lives.”

After this introduction, Basescu gives instructions: "Press one to learn about the uninominal voting. Press 2 to learn why the referendum on Nov. 25 is important to you. Press 3 to learn what is in your power to do and press four to learn about European Parliament elections, that take place on the same day as the referendum. If you want to leave a message, please press 5".

Thursday evening, the Democratic Party sent text messages to journalists with the contents: "If you are not sleeping, call 0316206200! This is not a joke, it’s news.”
