Romanian Police Confiscated Over 700 Licenses For Right-Of-Way Violations
The more than 770 officers supervised traffic in Romanian cities between 12 and 8 p.m., paying special attention to streets located near schools. An analysis on traffic risk showed a main cause of accidents is failure to give right of way to crossing pedestrians and especially children.
Although the officers’ active presence prevented accidents, 747 drivers had their licenses taken away.
According to police figures, 17 people have been killed and 150 have been injured this year while attempting to cross the road through clearly marked places. As a result of police action, the number of serious road accidents has gone down 13% in the first three months of this year, compared to the same interval of 2009. In the same period, the number of fatalities was 10% lower and the number of serious injuries dropped 11%.
Police warns pedestrians cross the street carefully and only in designated places.
