Fourteen people will be flown in to Bucharest from Paris and 79 from Lyon. On Friday, another flight will bring 132 more Romanians from Paris to Timisoara, western Romania. More Romanians of Roma ethnicity who chose the French government's voluntary repatriation scheme will arrive in Bucharest on August 26 (160 people), on September 2 (16) and on September 16 (11).
Romanian Interior Ministry officials said authorities will grant entry to all of the Roma, including Romanian citizens without identification papers. "Upon arrival in their place of residence, the citizens will be contacted by authorities with social reinsertion duties, such as town halls and employment agencies," said the officials.
The Romanian Foreign Ministry said the concept of voluntary repatriation is particular to French administrative law and is not found in European legislation. The ministry also called attention to the difference between deportation (which is against the person's will on the grounds that they are a menace to public order/health/security), voluntary repatriation (done with the person's consent and for a certain amount of money) and evacuation of illegal camps (the people continue to reside in the country).
