The Gold Rating for Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) certification recognizes buildings that set new standards in the design and construction of the world's greenest, most energy efficient and highly performing buildings. The Nokia Jucu factory is one of a small number of buildings around the world to achieve the LEED Gold rating and the first in Romania to be recognized by the USGBC for its green features, Nokia said in a press release Tuesday.
LEED green building certification system uses ratings from 0 to 100 points and comprises four certification steps: Certified (40-49 points), Silver (50-59 points), Gold (60-79 points) and Platinum (over 80 points).
Buildings are assessed according to 57 criteria that fall under categories such as sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality, innovation and regional priority.
Nokia's China campus in Beijing was the first Nokia facility to receive LEED Gold Certification in 2008.
The innovative and sustainable features recognized in Nokia's Romanian factory are its energy saving, water usage, recycling which has reduced the environmental footprint of the factory, the transport system which encourages employees to use a shuttle system instead of personal cars and the factory's superior working environment, the release also states.
Nokia's Jucu factory is a EUR60 million investment that was established in 2007 and was finalized in September 2008. Nokia is one of the most important investors in Romania in the telecommunication sector.
