Nokia To Make Phones For Europe, Middle East And Africa In Romanian Unit
"One of the reasons we decided to open this plant in Romania is to meet increasing demand in the EMEA area,” Simai said.
The Nokia official said the development of operations in Cluj has been according to plan, and the first mobile phones are to be produced in the first quarter of this year.
Simai, however, declined to say what models would be produced in the Romanian plant. She also said she cannot confirm Feb. 11 as the date for the plant’s official opening.
"The plant is currently being built. We will announce the exact date when the time comes,” Simai said.
"We have hired over 200 people until now and we are still recruiting. Our goal is to have 500 employees by mid- 2008 and we estimate to employ some 3,500 employees when the plant runs at full capacity," she added.
The Finnish giant reported last year a net profit of EUR7.2 billion, up 67% on the year, with net sales rising 24% to EUR51.1 billion.
Nokia said in March 2007 it would open a production unit in Romania, with an estimated investment of EUR60 million.
