According to a Tuesday evening press release, the ministry has received new information on the plume of ash caused by a volcanic eruption in Iceland. The Met Office, the United Kingdom’s national weather service, has updated its maps of the plume, possibly putting Romania under a new code red for aviation as of 9 a.m. on April 21.

The cited source said that, given air currents and their trajectories at altitudes below 2,000 meters, there is no possibility of pollutants exceeding safe levels on Romania’s territory.

Tests conducted on data gathered by the National Network for Monitoring Air Quality revealed no excess pollution, said Environment Ministry state secretary Ioan Mircea Cotosman in a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Other tests were conducted on water samples from rainfalls of the past hours. While preliminary results revealed no acid rain, further details are expected once the lab tests have been finalized, the state secretary said.
