The signature ceremony was also attended by the members of the two parties’ leadership structures.
Social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said this is a historic moment showing that democracy in Romania is now mature.
Geoana said the moment is historical because, after 20 years, two apparently irreconcilable parties agreed to join forces in a difficult moment for the country.
"In exceptional situations, exceptional solutions," he said.
Geoana added the agreement between the democrat liberals and the social democrats is the only format capable of providing stability and competent governing.
He added the governing agenda of the two parties constitutes just balance between economic dynamics and social protection and that both parties are willing to be “respectful” with the minorities in Romania.
Democrat liberal leader Emil Boc said both parties understood that “the time of disputes needs to end," that the authority of the state needs to be restored and added the partnership was not signed to restore the past. Boc concluded with the phrase “so help us God”!
"We are partners, but we will continue to be political and electoral competitors," Boc said, adding now is the time for politicians and parties to do battle using agendas.
