Over 30 Romanian Towns, Villages Affected By Rainfall, Floods In Past 24 Hours

Romania saw 36 towns and villages in 12 counties affected by heavy rainfall, 1,600 individual farms flooded and 54 people evacuated over the past 24 hours, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) said Saturday.

Heavy rainfall and river floods affected 36 localities in the counties of Bacau, Botosani, Brasov, Dambovita, Galati, Hundedoara, Ialomita, Mehedinti, Mures, Olt, Tulcea and Valcea, and 54 people had to be evacuated.
Flooding damaged 1,600 individual farms, 29 basements and 1,197 residences. One home was completely wrecked by the floods. About 1,504 hectares of farmland, 1,148 hectares of pasture and 20 hectares of forest were submerged, while seven company headquarters, 16 roads, nine bridges and 111 fountains were affected.

The flood effort was carried out by 1,066 emergency inspectorate stadd, 178 gendarmes, 123 police, 123 border police and 1,185 other Defense Ministry staff.

Romanian meteorologists extended the code yellow alert for rain until Monday, 9 a.m. for 16 counties in the northern, northeastern and central part of the country, and river floods remain a threat.

Twenty-three people have died in the severe floods that hit Romania over the past two weeks and thousands have been evacuated from their homes.
