Romanian President Sees Potential Romanian-Moldovan Border Treaty „Useless”
Basescu also said, in the opening of the Forum of Local Authorities in the Republic of Moldova and Romania, that the conditions and reticenses voiced out by Moldovan authorities, with respect to an agreement on small-scale border traffic between the two countries, are simply "bizarre."
The head of state pointed out that Romania signed an agreement after 1990 acknowledging the former Soviet Union’ border, adding Moldova inherited this border, therefore, it is useless to sign a border treaty which will make him a partner of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact."
Under these circumstances, the head of state stressed that Moldova’s recent decision to introduce visas for Romanians breaches its agreement with the European Union.
Basescu also said the forum organized Friday in northeastern city of Piatra Neamt allows Romanians on both sides of the River Prut to strengthen their relationship and make decisions for the future.
Moreover, Basescu pointed out that a solid partnership between local administrations in Romania and Moldova is meant to strengthen historical relations between the people of the two countries.
At the end of his speech, the head of state urged Romanian authorities to use European Union financing programs, as the deadline for the use of EU funds, set for 2013, is approaching.
