Of the total, EUR46 million was spent in online stores using ePayment solutions, which translates into 541,800 transactions, e-commerce payment solutions provider GECAD ePayment International said in a statement.

Romcard initially estimated online sales up to EUR60 million in 2008, up 65-70% from 2007.

The local e-commerce market was on upward trend in 2008, while the ePayment system attracted 270 new traders.

GECAD ePayment CEO, Carmen Sebe, said the upward trend will maintain in 2009, mainly due to harsh economic conditions both locally and globally.

The bulk of online purchases remained in the telecom industry with 35%, just like in 2007, followed by tourism and transportation with 26%.

Computer solutions integrator GECAD ePayment currently develops and holds three e-commerce platforms, namely, ePayment, Avangate and ARMS, of which, the ePayment system exclusively targets the local market.

RomCard is Romania’s leading provider of services for card payment systems with more than ten-year experience in the card operating sector.

RomCard has 150 active traders certified in the 3D Secure system and, so far, it has certified five banks in the 3D Secure trading system.
