The textile factory is one of the few employers in the small town with a population of less than 9,000, which has an alarming unemployment rate of over 70%, according to the local authorities’ website.
Local employment agency official Maria Georgeta Bora said Friday the factory employs mostly women, and 99 of them will be laid of as of December 19. The company said it faces an acute lack of orders.
Nearly 1,800 people in the county will lose their jobs by January or will be sent on temporary unemployment as companies halt production.
