Romania Govt Agencies Restructuring Leaves Nearly 9,000 People Jobless
The Government said that out of 226 agencies, authorities, administrations and offices, 141 were disbanded, merged or restructured. The rest of the agencies were kept unchanged, including 33 institutions required by the European Union.
The reorganization measure will cut 10,554 jobs in the public sector, of which 1,583 were vacant. The government estimates it will save about EUR52 million a year following the measure.
About 5,400 employees of state-owned companies under the authority of Romania’s Ministry of Economy will be laid off by the end of the year, adding to the layoff of 4,800 others at the beginning of January.
The 30 state-owned companies subordinated to the Economy Ministry will undergo restructuring, while 14 research institutes under the ministry’s authority will be merged into two units and will receive no subsidies as of January 1, 2010, minister of economy Adrian Videanu said.
