People with the president’s office told MEDIAFAX Geoana refused the president’s invitation.

Earlier Tuesday, Geoana wrote to Basescu and urged him to intervene and prevent a major political crisis that would be triggered with the sacking of Nica. Geoana told the president he will be the one responsible for the country’s political instability if he accepts the prime minister’s proposition to sack the social democrat minister.

Romanian democrat liberal Prime Minister Emil Boc said he sent the President the proposition to dismiss social democrat Interior Minister Dan Nica and to have democrat liberal Development Minister Vasile Blaga serve as interim because social democrats refused to nominate anyone.

Social democrat leaders said they decided to reaffirm their support for Nica and refused to nominate a replacement, threatening to leave the government.
