“The Official Gazette is subordinated to the president of Chamber of Deputies (Bogdan Olteanu – e.n.) and this is not the first time when Bogdan Olteanu blocks the publication of official documents issued by Romanian institutions, including decrees released by the Romanian President,” the presidency said in a statement.
The presidency urged Olteanu to show respect toward state’s institutions and not delay the publication of the law.
Earlier Monday, Olteanu said the law stipulating a 50% pay hike for staff in the educational system will be published in the country’s Official Gazette by Tuesday at the latest.
In turn, the lower house’s press office issued a statement saying the act was already sent for publication.
Last week, Romanian President Traian Basescu has approved a 50% wage hike for the education system employees, a law that would endanger the economic stability, according to the government.
Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu said Friday the wage hike is irresponsible and would lead to an economic catastrophe.
Standard & Poor’s rating agency on Monday lowered its long- and short-term foreign currency sovereign credit ratings on Romania to ‘BB+/B’ from ‘BBB-/A-3’, and its local currency long-term rating to ‘BBB-‘ from ‘BBB’.
The rating agency said Romanian lawmakers failed to address the economic challenges in the country, “as the focus has shifted to the upcoming general election, which has intensified the generally antagonistic and uncooperative political environment.”
