Romanian Opp Liberals Propose Two-Runoff Parliamentary Elections

Romania’s opposition Liberal Party will propose that the country’s law regulating elections be amended so that the uninominal parliamentary elections in 2012 have two runoffs, as in the case of elections for mayor or county council president, liberal vice-president Teodor Atanasiu said Saturday.

Atanasiu said during a conference in Cluj, northwestern Romania, that this amendment is necessary as not all lawmakers won elections in the constituencies in which they ran for a lawmaker seat. He added that, by implementing two-runoff parliamentary elections, winners of a lawmaker seat in constituencies will be the ones to represent people in Parliament.

According to Atanasiu, most liberal lawmakers agree with the idea of amending the election law so as to have two-runoff parliamentary elections.
