"The surveys show that the second quarter economic growth will be somewhere between 7.5% and 8%. In the second half of 2007, the country’s economy has accelerated, so the GDP growth in the second quarter could be lower, on a negative base effect," Ghizdeanu said.

Ghizdeanu said that a 7% level of this year’s economic growth is "certainly" a low estimation, adding the next estimation will bring at least one percentage points to the previous one.

Romania’s GDP grew 8.2% in the first three months of the year, well above the 6% growth reported in the same period a year earlier.

Economy and Finance Minister Varujan Vosganian said Thursday the economic growth is seen nearing 8% in the second quarter.
