“For the May 1 holiday, the Tourism Ministry managed to attract at the Black Sea seaside a record number of tourists, who spent a total ranging between EUR8 million and EUR10 million. According to official police reports, categorized accommodation units at the seaside hosted between 46,000 and 50,000 tourists, while another 50,000 tourists chose to spend the holiday in vacation bungalows, tents or at their relatives’ and friends’ etc.,” the statement noted.
The ministry said over 20,000 people attended the concert to promote Romania’s official tourism hymn.
Earlier Monday, the National Tour Agencies Association, or ANAT, estimated that the tourist inflow at the seaside between May 1 and May 3 stood at some 20,000 people, up over 30% compared to the similar period a year ago.
ANAT’s president Corina Martin justified the inconsistency by explaining that the association did not centralize the data.
Contacted by Mediafax, Martin revised upward their previous estimations to reach the numbers presented by the Tourism Ministry.
“After talking to you (Mediafax – e.n.), and then to your correspondent, I have contacted the Police and they told me 50,000 people checked in at seaside hotels. They mentioned 20,000 cars came in Constanta during these days and their conclusion was the total movement at the seaside in the mentioned period was of some 100,000 people,” Martin told reporters.
“When I told Mediafax earlier an estimate of over 20,000 tourists, I thought that maybe they were 25,000, let’s say 30,000, but it didn’t cross my mind they were so many. Now we are preparing a release with the new data,” Martin said.
