Asked by journalists whether he would sponsor any campaigns for this year’s legislative elections, Patriciu said he would do that within legal boundaries.

“Anybody can finance campaigns. Some I like, others I dislike. We’ll see, but everything will be done within legal limits,” he said.

Patriciu did not elaborate on which parties he likes and which he dislikes, nor on the sum he is willing to invest in election campaigns.

A leading liberal and CEO of Romania’s second largest oil company Rompetrol, Patriciu said a while ago that he sponsored the election campaign for Bucharest’s general mayor, democrat Adriean Videanu. He also said that in the 2004 elections, he did not sponsor the local elections campaign for opposition social democrats, but for the leader Mircea Geoana.
