Prosecutor Erminio Amelio initially requested a 12-year sentence.

Ioan Rus, aged 37, is charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and rape. He was arrested mid-April, after stabbing and raping a young woman from Lesotho near the La Storta train station in Rome.

A witness heard by prosecutors, Bruno Musci, said on the evening of April 17 he stopped his car near the La Storta train station and saw Rus while he was raping the 31-year old student.

The witness added the alarm was raised only after he met with a carabinieri patrol.
